（这里应该是昆明大观楼公园，后面好像过去还有一尊唐继尧的戎装骑马像，唐继尧是云南满清和民国时期的云南总督和政府主席。解放后被摧毁。近年来，云南有识之士要求恢复，因为唐公为云南做了许多有益的时期。戈叔亚注）

GeneralClaire Lee Chennault at bat; he loved to play baseball. He headedthe American Volunteer Group (AVG) and was promoted to general incommand of the 14th Air Force, based in Kunming.

一个中国人为我们提供食物（我们叫他乔治），他做得是仆人的工作。扫地，要他做什么，他就做什么。他有一个儿子，Luosh，生活在路边的小河边简陋的草棚里。乔治在河边做饭（主要就是做米饭）。
Thearmy supplied us with a Chinese man (we named him, George) to doour menial work, basically to sweep our floor, if we could get himto even do that! He had a son, Loush, and lived in this hovel inthe bank besides the road. George cooked their meals (mostly rice)under the shelter on the left.

Georgedid as little as he could to keep his job. We tried in vain to gethim to fix his “home.” He finally got the message when we tore itdown. Son Loush was “adopted” by the crew before I arrived and theyhad made boots and a GI uniform for him. Loush had a large goiter.When a group of us left for the States, October 1945, we took himto the Catholic orphanage and left him and money for an operation.He’d be about 75, if he’s still living.

这个场面我在老照片上多次看到，估计可能是昆明沿着滇缅公路出城的西郊某地，戈叔亚

Flagsat “half-mast” for President Roosevelt’s death.
一般情况下，飞机起飞时最好是风从西向东吹。这架飞机起飞也一样，吹东风，不幸的是撞到了跑到尽头的村庄，这架C－47的驾驶员把飞机尾巴的轮子也弄掉了。
Normally,prevailing winds required planes to takeoff west to east. Thisplane, took off, east to west. Unaccustomed to having a village atthe end of the runway, this C-47 pilot caught his tail wheel on arooftop.

Alocal War-Lord and his provincial troops occupied this compound, ashort distance behind our transmitter building. We were invited todinner. I was not able to attend, but was told it was a sumptuousmeal.

Allthe comforts of home. Reading by my handmade swinging bed-lamp. Wehad straw ticks for mattresses, a dresser and cabinet for ourclothes. And netting to keep the malaria mosquitoes out. One got meand I ended up in the hospital.

Thisone-eyed beggar, for a few coins, would show her empty eye socketwhich she kept covered with a leaf.
